What is a charter school?

A charter school is a public school established by contract with the State Board of Education, the State Board for Charter Schools, or a local school district. The purpose is to provide a unique setting for learning that will improve student achievement and provide additional public school choices for students and parents.

How are charter schools held accountable?

Charter schools must meet a higher standard of accountability than other public schools. They are closely monitored and can be closed down if they do not achieve the goals in their contract. Summit Charter School is chartered by the state and will be monitored by the state.

How are charter schools funded?

Annual operations are funded using the same dollar amounts per student as for other public schools. Because, at present, charter schools have no access to bond money, most will have to rent space. Like other public schools, they may also accept donations.

What grades will be included?

Summit Charter School will serve children from Kindergarten age through eighth grade (Middle School).

What's different about Summit Charter School?

Summit Charter School provides a new public school option for parents seeking greater involvement in their child's education. The school requires individualized learning plans for every child and parent inclusion in the learning process. The teacher, parents and child work together to fashion a tailor-made learning program based on individual styles of learning and the essential skills.

How will Summit Charter School teach children to take responsibility for their own learning?

Learners will be introduced to the concepts of self-direction and self-assessment as soon as they enter Summit Charter School. Self-direction does not mean "unsupervised." Self-direction means self-disciplined. Children will move to successive levels of indepence and personal responsibility as they are able to handle them successfully.

How is the role of parents different in Summit Charter School?

Summit Charter School believes that education takes place both at home and in the school. Therefore, parents and the school must be active partners in the education of the child. At Summit Charter School parent involvement is not a policy, it is a requirement. Parent inclusion is essential to the structure of the school.

Each family will enter into a parent - partnership agreement with the school. This agreement outlines the responsibilities of the educational team which includes parents.
