6th Grade Homeroom

Ms. Stone is in the 6th grade homeroom as the Language Arts and Literature teacher. This year’s Literature class has read Banner in the Sky by Ullman, Summer of the Monkeys by Rawls, The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle by Avi, and The Westing Game by Raskin. We’ve also read short stories, poetry, and informational pieces. In Language Arts, we have a whole new textbook by Holt. Within this one book are grammar, reading and writing exercises. The class has written a research paper on Science based topics, and studied the Appalachian Trail while delivering speeches in a contest. We’re going gangbusters this year!

Language Arts in the 7th grade:
7th grade Language Arts teacher Annie Stone has a year filled with reading, writing and grammar. The students use WriteSource 2000 as a resource guide. The general layout of a typical week is: Two days a week include grammar instruction, while the remaining three are dedicated to writing. Novels read this year are Belle Prater’s Boy by White, and The Black Pearl by O’Dell. Short stories, poems and informational pieces are read as well. A research paper is written on Science curriculum topics, and an Appalachian Trail research paper and speech contest is also held. The students write for ExploraVision, a national Science competition. 7th grade has a special Writers Workshop, once a week, in preparation for the NC State Writing Exam.
Language Arts in the 8th grade:
Annie Stone also teaches Language Arts in the 8th grade. Reading, writing and grammar are emphasized. WriteSource 2000 is used as the resource guide. Your Brother Sam is Dead by Collier and Collier is studied in the fall, and a Newberry Award winning novel is chosen individually by students to read in the spring. Short stories, poems, and informational pieces are read throughout the year. High level writing tasks are assigned, for example on moral and ethical dilemmas. A Science based research paper is completed, as well as an Appalachian Trail paper and speech contest. The students also write for ExploraVision, a national Science competition.
