Welcome to Fourth Grade

The fourth grade classroom is an engaging and interactive environment where disovery is an intrical part of the learning process. Cooperative group building activities help increase students’ social and emotional awareness. Students are encouraged to be independent thinkers and have opportunities to do independent, partner and small group work.

As students examine history, we discuss and celebrate the cultural diversity in history and in ourselves. Throughout the year the students study geography and  North Carolina history. They discuss moral lessons learned from history and are given opportunities to apply the lessons to daily life.
The fourth grade science curriculum is implimented through a hands on group approach to discovery. We begin with plants and plant cycles, rocks and minerals, magnetism and electricity. The science curriculum is one of inquiry, observation, investigation and group interaction.

The language arts curriculum teaches students to recognize and appreciate the writer’s craft. Students learn to “read as writers” as they explore the style and technique authors use to create stories. Throughout the year, students read quality literature independently, in small Book Clubs and as a class. Students learn how to write narratives and discuss books. As a teacher, my primary goal is to instill a love of reading and writing in my students.

In addition to academic lessons, fourth graders learn about leadership, group dynamics and class procedures. Cooperative games and initiatives are introduced to the students throughout the year. The activities are a complement to their learning experience, and they help create a class environment where students are encouraged to celebrate both academics and relationships.

The new program that I am excited about this year is our Heritage Clubs. We have organized multi-aged groups and we meet every Wednesday afternoon. The groups rotate every five to ten weeks through different heritage groups. All of these clubs have the theme of our local heritage or they link to the regional settlment. Quilting and sewing give students a hand-on history lesson. The appalachian trail has brought people from miles around. Teaching about hiking and backpacking gives our students a sense of place. The club called “Cashiers past and present” integrates the heritage and settlement of the community with the building structures over time. I believe this program will enable our students to appreciate their unique cummunity.
