Cindy Henderson
Odyssey Wofford

Welcome to First Grade

First grade is taught by Cindy Henderson and Odyssey Wofford, using the team teaching approach to the classroom.  In this approach as one teacher assumes the responsibility for class wide instruction, the other teacher circulates the room and monitors student achievement and behavior.  Each are responsible for different aspects of the curriculum.  Cindy and Odyssey have cultivated a true partnership in the classroom and maintain a focus on the students.

In first grade, first and foremost, we read!  We use the "Open Court"  reading program.  This program includes phonics study, word study lessons and reading practice using decodable books. We use the D'Nealian handwriting program and practice this daily through journaling throughout each school day.

Math time means lots of "manipulatives". We use Everyday Mathematics. We measure, count coins, learn to tell time, add and subtract, study numbers and number patterns, shapes, etc...  These lessons are often taught and practiced using dominoes, real money, teacher-made games, and everyday items.

Our Science study includes learning about balance and motion, solids and liquids, and the environment around us.  In Social Studies we learn about wants and needs, producers and consumers, diverse family units, and have daily lessons to understand our 7 virtues and how to "live" these virtues to become good citizens.

The Balance and Motion unit in our new science kit is fun to study. Can you balance a pencil by its point on your finger? Using counterweights, we learn how to do just that. We also observe and compare how objects balance, spin, and roll.

Throughout the year, we study a variety of animals.  We learn how and where they live, how they protect themselves, what they eat, and what they call their young.

Being in the first grade at such a unique school is a very special place to be. It is a fun way to spend the day, learn new things constantly, and practice the virtues that we pledge each morning. Working and playing paired together are on-going tasks at Summit Charter School.
